NMPI sees research and experiments as avenues through which the modeling - policy divide can be effectively bridged. The network has developed a concise research and development agenda based on its core themes. NMPI is involved in two kinds of research and experiement, they include:
1. Inhouse projects - initiatives conceptualized, lead and financed by NMPI
2. Collaborative projects - initiatives lead and financed by external organisations that may or may not have membership in NMPI
