Special Event: Session on Ensemble Forecasting at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2010

From
2010-05-02 to 2010-05-07

Title: Towards practical applications in ensemble hydro-meteorological forecasting

Venue: Vienna, Austria

Summary:

Ensemble forecasting techniques have made significant progress in recent years and proved to be essential in hydrological forecasts. There is an ever increasing expectation for good forecast quality as many more organisations, including basin authorities, water managers and emergency response authorities, adopt ensemble forecast systems. The value of ensemble forecasting becomes even more apparent when one considers its potential socio-economic benefit for public safety, flood control and reservoir management.

However, more research is still required to improve not only the reliability of meteorological forecasts, through post-processing and downscaling techniques, but also to assess all the predictive uncertainties involved in the hydro-meteorological forecast chain. Forecast predictability can be further enhanced through data assimilation and new strategies for communicating uncertain forecasts can contribute to provide useful information to decision-makers.

The session aims to bring together scientists and engineers from hydrology, meteorology and the social sciences, as well as practitioners and stakeholders to evaluate the potential of ensemble forecast techniques in pre-operational and/or operational forecasting systems. Contributions will cover but are not restricted to the following topics:

   1. Hydro-meteorological ensemble forecasting studies with different hydrological and climatic regimes that can lead to a reliable assessment of the ensemble techniques;
   2. Methods or standards that have been developed to assess or benchmark the performance of ensemble rainfall-runoff modelling.
   3. Pre- and post-processing of forecasts
   4. Methods and products for efficient communication of probabilistic forecasts and their use in practical decision making
   5. Practical applications of ensembles in operational systems.

The session encourage contributions that also document problems, failures as well as successes encountered in the practice of operational ensemble forecasting. Convenor of the session is Dr. Helen Yi HE of the Environmental Monitoring and Modeling Group at Kings College London (KCL) and member of NMPI.

UK Groundwater Modellers' Forum Workshop: Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

On 2008-01-31, from 0930HRS to 1600HRS

Venue: Priory Rooms, Bull St, Birmingham, United Kingdom

Summary:
The UK Groundwater Modellers’ Forum Committee is holding a sixth workshop on the subject of Communication and Stakeholder Engagement on the 31st January, 2008. Groundwater models are constructed to answer questions and inform decisions relating to various aspects of water resources and aquifer management. To maximise the usefulness of such models in decision making it is important that clear communication is maintained throughout the modelling process, from inception to the presentation of model results. The objectives of the workshop are to: (1) Provide an overview of how models are used in decision making (2) Review different ways in which model results can be presented (3) Explore ways to improve stakeholder engagement (4) Make recommendations on best practice and future R&D.
